Cocos Weather - Perfect for Kite & SUP
facebook

Sitting out in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands get a trade wind that is perfect for kitesurfing. The winds start in May and become consistent by June & July then decrease around November and the "doldrums" set in about December.. Perfect for SUP!

SUP'ing is also good in the trade wind season as the boards can be paddled on the east side of the atoll, protected by the winds, or the wind can be used for long down winders.

Zephyr Kite Tours opens the centre in the thick of it where the winds are the best for kiting. Our tours start at the end of July until mid October. This means all the tours are likely to get the best winds possible!

From our recent survey 90% of people that have visited the Cocos Islands for kitesurfing ticked "kited all day everyday" & "Kited most days"

As the seasons change, so does Zephyr Kite Tours. We have observed, that throughout a Cocos trade wind cycle, there is sometimes a few days, 1 - 3 days, of no wind. This is usually about every 2 - 3 weeks, sometimes longer. In these downtimes, we now offer Stand up paddling so you can be on the water ALL the time.

On a “Cost per Kitable Day” basis, a 14 day package tour with ZKT to Cocos can therefore end up being nearly 50% cheaper than a similar package elsewhere. As the Cocos Islands are very isolated in the middle of the Indian Ocean, it’s not a cheap place to get to, But at Zephyr Kite Tours, we have created a safe, fun and friendly environment to enjoy the amazing winds.

See the wind stats for 2011 July August September October from the BOM.
Note: all BOM observations are in km/h and are for the CKI airport which sits behind the tree line of West Island. Kite beach is usually 3-4 knots more than observed at this airport weather reading station.

Also play with the old weather observations to get cool details & graphs about the Cocos weather. This graph to the right is the mean wind at 3pm between 1952 & 2010! http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_200284.shtml

And as always Seabreeze.com.au has all the weather you need.
