Ben Strowger – KA Senior Instructor
Owner, Stoke Coach, & Duotone Team Rider
Ben has been passionate about board sports since he left England in 2003. As a natural motivator and frother of any action sport, he’s been leading people on adventures to snowboard, party and kitesurf for years.
Ben’s friendly and positive outlook on life is contagious and his passion for kitesurfing and adventure will blow you out of the water – literally! His tagline of, “Keep it simple, make it stylish,” will have you kiting with more style and better technique in no time.
When kiting, Ben loves to fly high and boasts a WOO record of 24.4m (#3 all-time in Australia). However, when out of the water, Ben puts all his focus and energy into ensuring he delivers the highest level of customer service, providing you with the best customer experience.
When he’s not living the stoke kiting in remote destinations around the world, Ben works for our partner retail shop Ocean Addicts in Sunshine Coast, QLD. Check out his Stoke Coach sessions for the ultimate inspiration and see why he gets people to follow him anywhere around the world for the stoke.
JUST. BE. STOKED.
Cat Jay – KA Level 1
Cat joins us in her second season kitesurfing and second year as part of the Zephyr Team! This time around, Cat’s taking a back-seat role by providing Ben with much needed admin support! Swapping the classroom for the spare room, Cat has taken a break from high-school teaching and set up a business from home working as a Virtual Assistant.
Since quitting teaching, Cat has had much more time to spend on the water to develop her kite skills and completed her Kitesurfing Australia Level 1 instructor course in April. In February 2021, Cat competed in the QLD State Freestyle titles in Elliott Heads. Thanks to COVID and travel restrictions, the Women’s title was left wide open with Cat taking out top honours on her 40th birthday! Cat is keen to progress to some unhooked freestyle moves and would like to learn how to “keep it simple and make it stylish”!
Taking her business on the road, Cat will be joining the crew in Cocos from Tour 4. Cat is excited to be back kiting under blue, sunny skies, with flat water beneath her board, and is looking forward to kicking back on the sun lounge with a cocktail in hand, enjoying some much-needed rest and relaxation!
Folkert Bosma – IKO Level 1
Head Instructor / Beach Manager
Making a return this season with his infectious smile and trademark bald head is resident dutchman, Folky! Hailing from the Netherlands, Folky has spent the last 18 months working and road tripping around Australia and first joined the Zephyr team in 2020 for our Far North QLD Tour and then again for the Cocos season.
After and epic time in Cocos, Folky found himself living in Perth for the summer where he managed the kite school, Soul Kite. As summer ended, so did Folky’s kitesurfing adventures, trading the coastal lifestyle for farm work and 10 weeks of tractor driving!
When the wind is blowing, Folkie will be the first on the water and the last one off. Now throwing down megaloops, Folky has also mastered the darkslide into backroll like a pro! Folky’s keen to add more to his trick book this season in Cocos, with board-offs and unhooked freestyle moves next on the list!
We look forward to having Folky back this season, if not for his energy and enthusiasm, then for his eclectic playlists providing the soundtrack to Kite Beach!
Hailing originally from Israel, Ran moved to Australia to pursue kitesurfing and surfing waves. Now basing himself in the Margaret River, Ran would like to stay in Australia permanently and has plans to work as a full-time kite instructor in the future.
Having spent two seasons in northern W.A., from Gnaraloo to Exmouth, Ran further developed his kitesurfing skills. He has a passion for freestyle kiting, and since being in Australia, has discovered how awesome wave kiting can be!
Ran’s love of ocean activities led him to work on a commercial fishing boat up in Shark Bay and Abrolhos Islands for two seasons. Ran is a keen spearfisherman and plans to bring his mad fishing skills to Cocos, adding freshly caught fish to the menu! With his trademark “fro” and super chilled vibe, Ran will be entertaining the crew by laying down some slick guitar tunes.
Joining the team as our tour “Master Chef”, Josh currently resides in the Margaret River, operating a small catering company, “Leaf and Ladle Catering”, and brings with him 20 years of industry experience. Having worked three seasons as the head chef aboard the luxury Kimberley Expedition’s vessel, the MV Reef Prince, Josh thrives by the challenge of working in remote locations.
Josh’s interest in kitesurfing began while working at the Monte Bello Islands, near the Ningaloo reef. With the W.A. strong and consistent coastal winds sometimes making is too difficult to surf or dive, kitesurfing became the perfect sport for Josh to get out on the water longer! Josh is keen to develop his kite skills in boosting bigger for longer and would like to progress to more technical unhooked tricks.
A self-proclaimed talker, traveller and lover of language, Josh speaks French, German and Spanish and “could talk the ears of Prince Charles himself!”
What’s on the menu, you ask? With freshly caught seafood options, delicious zucchini fritters and a variety of healthy salads, Josh can’t wait to cook up a storm for you all beachside at Zephyr H.Q.
