KITESURFING CAPITAL OF THE WORLD
Welcome to South Africa, Zephyr Tours’ epic backdrop for intrepid exploration and your kitesurfing progression! Be inspired to push yourself to the limits while touring during the most extreme kite event on the planet and rubbing shoulders with the industry’s elite.
South Africa has got it all; epic coastline, colourful culture, abundant wildlife, fantastic weather, powerful wind, open beaches spanning for miles, rolling green valleys littered with wineries, and iconic mountains with breathtaking views.
Packed with adventure and culture, you’ll have the pleasure of experiencing everything South Africa has to offer while escaping the crowds and kiting waves, flat water lagoons and the strong winds.
Lead by our favourite South African kite instructor, Johnny Fassler, he will guide us to the best kitesurfing areas around Cape Town and beyond. Local knowledge is the key when travelling in South Africa, not only to stay safe, but to find the best kite spots and fun activities to do away from the crowds.
RED BULL KING OF THE AIR
The Redbull King Of The Air (KOTA) event is renowned as the biggest kiteboarding competition on the planet! Extreme kitesurfers go as big as they can and throw down their craziest and most dangerous tricks just a few metres from the cheering crowd of spectators.
This competition is set in one of the world’s windiest towns. With a 3-week window, the competitors start to gather in Cape Town and practice boosting until the forecast looks favourable and the day of competition is called.
The actual event may take anywhere from 1 to 3 days to decide a winner, and watching these extreme athletes boost for their lives is one of the greatest spectator sports around today.
PUSH YOUR LIMITS
Staying just far enough away from the popular kite beach, home of the KOTA event, but close enough to see it from your balcony, we have a deluxe minibus and dedicated driver to whisk you around the epic coastline in style and comfort. We also have a 4×4 and trailer to carry all our gear.
Think of your 10 best kite spots, mix them all up, then supercharge them – that’s South Africa’s Cape, and you’ll get to enjoy them all! Our tour guide and local kiter Johnny says:
I think you could easily kite a different spot every day for a year if the winds allowed it. But what might surprise you is that 99% of kiteboarders that come to enjoy South Africa’s windy season don’t even venture away from the main spots”.
That’s why on this Zephyr Tour we explore and take you to the best spots for the wind direction and conditions of each day. You’ll get to kite some magical locations, world-class spots which we could have all to ourselves. You’ll get to see the real South Africa and its epic diversity.
Of course, we’ll take you to the main spots too, Blouberg, Big Bay, and Langebaan along with watching the King of the Air tournament on the days it’s called.
TOUR INCLUSIONS
THE CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA
Cape Town is an amazing city which has earned its reputation as one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. With natural wonders such as Table Mountain offering a stunning backdrop, the views are hard to beat. Contrasting with this, it also has a fierce reputation as being the Cape of Storms.
The Cape Peninsula has a Mediterranean climate with dry days and warm weather during the Summer. South Africa is well known for its wine, with much of it being produced in the cape. With a rich cultural history, there are lots of museums to explore, day trips to Cape Point or Robben Island as well as attempting to climb either Table Mountain or Lions Head.
Our base in Cape Town is on a peninsula so there is always an ideal place to kite no matter which way the wind blows. On this tour, we will explore both sides and escape the crowds with day trips and overnight adventures to other famous kite spots like Langebaan, Witsand, Struisbaai and Strand to name a few.
GETTING THERE
Make your way to Cape Town airport where we will have someone meet you on the tour start date. Flights into Cape Town run daily from various airlines and are priced from $1529 return from Perth. We will arrange your airport transfers on the tour start and finish dates. If you are extending your stay, either before or after the tour, we can arrange transfers to or from your private accommodation in Cape Town at the start or end of the tour.
WHERE WE KITE
With some of the best places to kite on the planet, you’ll never get tired of what South Africa has on offer!
Check out a few of our favourite kite spots you’ll visit on this tour.
WHERE WE STAY
Based in Bloubergstrand, right on the kite strip and a short distance from KOTA but far enough from the crowds, our lux 5 bedroom house has awesome views of Table Bay, Table Mountain, and Robben Island.
Watch the wind come in and the KOTA event right from your bedroom or the open plan living areas. All rooms are twin share with as many bathrooms, a double lock up garage and multiple living areas.
When we venture further afield to Straisbaai, Witsands or Lagabaan, you’ll have equally amazing dwellings to enjoy while exploring the local kite spots without clocking up too many km’s in one day.
MORE THAN JUST KITESURFING
There are plenty of adventures and places to visit around Cape Town which we will try and squeeze in around the KOTA and your own kiting, but here are Johnny’s must-do South African non-kiting experiences which we’ve included in this package.
Depending on the weather, there are loads more… but here’s a start.
THE BEST IN SOUTH AFRICAN CUISINE
As with all Zephyr Tours, we don’t skimp on food. Our team will have your tastebuds jumping and your body fueled with healthy breakfasts, big lunches and in-house dinners.
Our South African Braai (bbq) will be used a lot (and have you seen the size of the locals)? Meat, meat and more meat, fish, fresh local veggies and excellent local coffee will be served to ensure your energy levels are high for huge days of kiting and boosting.
Each day will be planned around the wind, the KOTA events, restaurants and the best kite location for the day. Like always, you can sit back, relax, and let us take care of everything, so all you have to think about it kiting!
