Ben Strowger – Owner, Stoke Coach & Duotone Team Rider
Ben has been passionate about board sports since he left England in 2003. As a natural motivator and frother of any action sport, he’s been leading people on adventures to snowboard, party and kitesurf for years.
Ben’s friendly and positive outlook on life is contagious and his passion for kitesurfing and adventure will blow you out of the water – literally! His tagline of, “Keep it simple, make it stylish,” will have you kiting with more style and better technique in no time.
When kiting, Ben loves to fly high and boasts a WOO record of 17.8m. However, when out of the water, Ben puts all his focus and energy into ensuring he delivers the highest level of customer service, providing you with the best customer experience.
When he’s not living the stoke kiting in remote destinations around the world, Ben works for our partner retail shop Ocean Addicts in Sunshine Coast, QLD. Check out his Stoke Coach sessions for the ultimate inspiration and see why he gets people to follow him anywhere around the world for the stoke.
JUST. BE. STOKED.
Off the back of finishing his MBA in Entrepreneurship in the Netherlands, Folkert headed Down Under for some backpacking adventures and first joined the Zephyr team in July for the North QLD tour. He could not be happier exchanging the cold Dutch water for the warmer Australian Ocean of the tropics! Sporting an infectious smile and trademark bald head, Folkie’s enthusiasm for kiting is matched only by his passion for coaching and sharing the stoke!
When the wind is blowing, Folkie will be the first on the water and the last one off. You’ll mainly see him boosting as high as he can trying to smash his previous WOO record. Folkie’s goal for the season is to learn board-off mega loops so he can send it with the big boys!
Off the water, Folkie is always up for a beer and is keen to chew the fat and trade kite stories.
Becky Bury – Marketing Guru / Host Extraordinaire
Becky joins the team from Perth but hails from Northern England. She’s the hostess with the mostess and is not a stranger to adding HP sauce to breakfast and tasty homemade treats to the menu. Sourcing fabulous local produce where and when possible along with freshly caught seafood, Becky aims to stave off your hunger pangs will delectable delicacies just as much as Cocos feeds your insatiable appetite for kiting.
Becky has been shredding for about three years, taking out second place in the Red Bull Lighthouse to Leighton ladies twintip division in 2019! She likes to ride hard, tries new tricks every day and always with a HUGE smile on her face! But beware! If she’s floating around with a camera, she’ll be making your friends jealous by posting on our socials!
Luca De Prato – KA Kite Instructor / Wave Coach
Hailing originally from Italy, Luca’s interest in kitesurfing dates back 20 years when the extreme sport was still in its infancy and where limited kite technology had poor power management and inadequate safety systems. This inspired Luca to become an instructor where his focus was to teach safety and share the kite stoke. After following the windy seasons, he eventually landed in Perth 10 years ago where he now froths the local kite spots.
Keen to become a part of the local kite community, Luca started his own kite school and became part of the Kiteboarding WA (KWA) committee. He is an accomplished kite competitor in freestyle, race and waves, having won the Red Bull Lighthouse to Leighton in 2015, and the Master category of the Lancelin Ocean Classic in 2018.
You will mostly find Luca on the waves, freestyling on his directional board, but he doesn’t mind playing on the twin-tip every now and then. With his kiting philosophy of, “Play hard, but play safe”, Luca is passionate about sharing his kite knowledge and helping riders push their limits.
Cat Jay – Logistics Manager / Boat Commander
Cat’s passion for action sports dates back to the mid 2000’s where she spent several years teaching snowboarding in Canada; and she is just as happy thrashing her dual suspension mountain bike down the flow trails of Derby, TAS, as she is catching the perfect point-break wave off Noosa Heads. Adding kitesurfing to her melody of adrenaline sports, Cat has spent the last year honing her skills and is ready to throw down in Cocos.
Ditching her day job as a Visual Arts teacher, Cat joins the Zephyr team to help make sure each day runs smoothly and everything is taken care of. You’ll find her darting around in the support boat, capturing candid images of your adventures and chauffeuring you between the Islands amazing kite spots.
Cat is looking to nail her first tricks and execute the perfect back-roll by the end of the season. She might be the bosses Missus, but Cat’s got her own set of mad skills up her sleeve. Bringing along her acoustic guitar, Cat will be entertaining the crew with her soulful campfire melodies.
Looking after us like family since 2013, Kimiko and Songhie are the owners of the first Eco Tourism business on Yorke Island.
Their hospitality and welcoming spirit is the driving force behind the authentic experience you receive when visiting Yorke Island to kitesurf with Zephyr Tours.
Like all indigenous people, Kimiko and Songhie have close ties to the land and ocean and have created a tourist friendly beachside centre for us to enjoy.
