The Southbound Send-Off: From Exmouth to Augusta | Part 2

With the wind forecast in Augusta looking absolutely epic, Ben and Cat packed up in Cervantes and made a beeline straight south. No scenic detours, no catching up with friends — when the wind calls, we answer. Four nights were booked at Turner Caravan Park, perfectly positioned right on the mouth of Hardy Inlet, and we even managed to score a waterfront site. Camper set, Taj Mahal deployed, and with the sound of water lapping nearby, we settled in for the night, knowing the next few days were going to deliver.

Long Lunch & a Familiar Face

The following day, the wind wasn’t expected to arrive until later in the afternoon, leaving us with a rare luxury: time to explore. For those who’ve joined us in Cocos over the years, you’ll be well acquainted with our resident chef Max. After three seasons keeping our guests well-fed in the tropics, Max decided to trade palm trees and trade winds for vineyards and fine dining, taking up a role at one of Margaret River’s finest winery restaurants.

Given Augusta’s close proximity, a leisurely lunch at Vasse Felix was a no-brainer — especially knowing Max was behind the scenes. Exceptional food, beautiful wines, and sweeping vineyard views from the restaurant deck made for a pretty special afternoon. It’s not every day you get served world-class cuisine by someone who’s previously been feeding you post-kite curries in Cocos.

Sunset Sessions & Zephyr Reunions

With lunch wrapped up, a few souvenir wine bottles tucked away for safekeeping, and the wind clocks ticking, we headed straight back to Augusta to get rigged for an evening session. What made this one extra special was the lineup on the water — a full-blown Zephyr reunion. Sharing the session with Marnix, Ieke, Ran, Max, Maddie, and Luis brought big smiles and good vibes.

As forecast, the wind arrived right on cue, building to 25+ knots. The water was glassy, the kites were small, and the crew wasted no time sending loops, boosting high, and exchanging mid-session high-fives. Butter-flat water, golden-hour light, and familiar faces — this one ticked all the boxes.

Augusts Keeps on Delivering

The next two days only got better. Strong, consistent wind. Great company. And that classic Augusta magic where the breeze gradually builds through the afternoon. Start the session cruising and working on progression on a bigger kite, then finish fully powered, boosting hard and sending it as the sun drops lower.

If Augusta isn’t already on your kiteboarding bucket list, it absolutely should be. Flat water, reliable wind, and an unbeatable community vibe. And if it’s blowing, chances are you’ll find Max and Ran there — kites rigged, smiles on faces.

Onward, Eastbound

And just like that, our WA road trip comes to a close. So many unforgettable sessions, stunning locations, and quality time with friends has left us already planning the return. But for now, it’s time to point the vehicle east and begin the long journey home — with plenty more adventures and kite spots still waiting to be discovered.

We’ll see you soon.
