Early January saw us chasing sunshine, sea breezes, and good times on the Sunshine Coast, hosting a fully custom kitesurfing tour for one of our international clients. This one was all about progression, variety, and making the most of everything the coast had to offer, both on and off the water.
Our crew for the week was Celia, Shane, and Amelia. With Amelia completely new to kitesurfing, we called in one of our most experienced instructors (and Cocos fave), Kev, to work closely with her throughout the tour. Meanwhile, Ben took charge of coaching Celia and Shane — both already confident riders and keen to take things up a notch.
Golden Beach - Where It All Begins
We kicked things off at Golden Beach, a dream location, showcased by local photographer, Bluey’s Photography, just south of Maroochdyore, for first-time kite lessons. Flat, protected water, no current, and plenty of room to breathe. This location is hard to beat for learning the ropes.
Day one was all about foundations for Amelia: kite control, body drags, and building confidence. Golden Beach delivered exactly what we needed, and by the end of the session, things were already starting to click.
Maroochydore Rivermouth - The Local Favourite
Day two took us to Ben and Cat’s favourite local spot, the Maroochydore Rivermouth, a location that offers a little bit of everything. Glassy flat water inside the mouth, waves rolling through for kickers, and that unmistakable Sunshine Coast blue.
With Ben coaching from the water, Celia and Shane were well and truly in their element — sending jumps higher, cleaner, and with more confidence each session. The progression was obvious, and the smiles said it all. Add Pincushion Island in the background, and you’ve got yourself a pretty special place to kite.
Chasing Wind North
With the forecast hinting at better wind further north, it was time to load up and hit the road. We based ourselves in the charming seaside town of Bargara, using it as a launchpad to explore a handful of our favourite northern spots.
Woodgate - Quiet Location & Seriously Good
A stop at Woodgate is always a highlight, and this trip was no exception. This small coastal town has no local kite scene, which means one thing — empty beaches and zero competition for water space. Just how we like it.
The spot sits at the entrance to the Theodolite River, where constantly shifting sandbars create new and ever-changing conditions. On this visit, a perfectly positioned sandbar had formed on the northern side of the rivermouth, with deep, butter-flat water.
It was the ideal setup for flat-out speed runs, jump progression, and boosting practice. Celia and Shane took full advantage, both continuing to push for more height and cleaner landings.
Cruising at Elliott Heads
The following day, we headed to Elliot Heads, another standout location set on the Elliot River. Winds were lighter, so we dusted off the bigger kites and settled into a cruisier session.
Even with lighter wind, the conditions delivered: warm sunshine, clear water, and plenty of quality time on the water, proving that not every session needs to be nuking to be memorable.
Last-Day Milestones
On our final day, we looped back through Woodgate, which turned out to be the perfect place to finish the tour.
After a week of focused coaching with Kev, everything came together for Amelia, who nailed her first proper, prolonged runs on the board. A huge milestone, and a pretty special moment to wrap things up.
Good Food & Great Company
Off the water, the Sunshine Coast delivered as always. We sampled some of the coast’s best dining, with The Boatshed and Market Bistro easily topping the list of crowd favourites, proof that recovery meals are just as important as recovery sessions.
A massive thank you to Celia, Shane, and Amelia for choosing Zephyr to host and facilitate their custom kite tour. It was an absolute pleasure sharing these locations, sessions, and progression wins with you.
If you or your kite crew are dreaming up a Custom Tour with Zephyr, get in touch.
If you can dream it, we’ll make it happen.
